Athabasca River

The Athabasca River is a large, unregulated northern river which originates near Jasper, Alberta, crosses Alberta in a northeasterly direction, and empties into the southwestern corner of Lake Athabasca.

The Athabasca River produces Pike up to twenty pounds in size, Walleye that reach twelve pounds, and Goldeye that weigh up to three in lower reaches of this area. In the upper reaches, you'll find Bull Trout that weigh up to ten pounds, Rainbows and Grayling up to two pounds, and Rockies up to three.

The river runs parallel to Highway 16 from Jasper Park boundary to Obed, then it flows northeast to Whitecourt. The best place to catch big Bull Trout, Rockies and Grayling is probably near the mouth of the Berland River in September. This spot can be reached from Edson-Fox Creek cutoff.
