Heading east from Edmonton, near
the town of Lac La Biche lies beautiful Beaver Lake. While much of this lake lies within
an Indian Reserve and is subsistence netted, I doubt if there is a lake in Alberta with
more walleye. Unfortunately, the netting keeps them from reaching over five pounds. But if
you're looking for good eating fish in the two to three pound range, this is the place to
go. Beaver Lake is a structure fisherman's dream.
There are more points, reefs, inside turns and mid-lake humps than should be legal on a
lake this size. This is one of those lakes where you can fish almost anywhere and catch
fish.
The same goes for presentation
and bait... everything works. Beaver Lake walleye can easily be caught on jigs,
crankbaits, bouncers and spinners, live bait rigs, blade baits and jigging spoons, all in
the same day. These fish are highly aggressive and even the most drastic cold front barely
dampens their spirit. Be careful running a boat, especially near the narrows. There are
some nasty reefs hidden just far enough under the water to be unnoticeable, but very hard
on bottom ends.
