The Crowsnest River

Flowing through forests teeming with wildlife, the Crowsnest is famous for its dry fly and nymph fishing. Early season fishes well with big stone fly nymphs and dry fly attractor patterns. Late season gives way to excellent Blue Winged Olive hatches, and streamer fishing.

Perfectly situated just a two hour drive from Calgary in the S.W. corner of the province, the historic Crowsnest Pass also features many other rivers and streams which rival some of the more famous Montana waters just to the south. To take full advantage of the evening hatches, an overnight stay is recommended.

The Crowsnest River becomes very high and dirty in the spring so a good choice for lures might be a heavily weighted nymph. (big black stoneflies or golden stones). It has Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout up to eight pounds. Bull Trout up to four pounds and Rockies up to two pounds. The river parallels Highway 3 from Crowsnest on the B.C. border to its confluence with the Oldman River Reservoir at Cowley.
