Pigeon Lake for Walleye |
|
|
| Pigeon Lake lies south of
Edmonton. While this lake has always produced walleye, it was in 1993 that it really came
into its own. Anglers were hooking 10 to 12 pound fish with alarming consistency in July
and August. While you may not catch the huge numbers that some of the other lakes in the
province produce, Pigeon Lake is a good bet to hook that once in a lifetime trophy. With over 2,300 cottages on the lake and numerous campgrounds, Pigeon Lake is subject to very heavy boat traffic and water activity in the summer months. Yet, fishing pressure remains only moderate. While walleye are native to this lake, they were nearly eradicated in the mid 60's by an excessive commercial harvest. They were restocked again in 1979 and have started to bounce back. Pigeon Lake is not capable of withstanding a heavy harvest by recreational anglers and it is critical that all walleye be returned. There is very little structure available in Pigeon Lake and presentations like bouncers and spinner rigs and live bait rigs are best suited to the scattered walleye. Anglers did extremely well in the past by slow trolling a live bait rig with a clown Spin-N-Glo and nightcrawler along the weed edges. Weeds are the primary structure for walleye in Pigeon Lake. If concentrations of walleye can be located in the weeds, try fishing a slip-bobber with a jig and leech beneath it. |
