Smoky River (Big Smoky) |
The Smoky River has its best fishing moments in the fall when the river clears and in its backwaters and mouths of tributaries. When the river is quite muddy, it is best to use bait for any luck at all. It has Pike, Walleye, and Bull Trout weighing up to ten pounds. Rockies reach up to three pounds in size while you will also find Grayling and Goldeye's in the two pound size. The Goldeye are mainly found in the lower reaches of the river. Fishing access to the Smoky River and its main tributary, the Kakwa, has been improved by the use of jet boats in recent years. It is crossed by Highway 34 about forty kilometres east of Grande Prairie, by Highway 49 at Watino west of Falher, then joins the Peace River just upstream of the town of Peace River. |
